Piano Design Handbook

For most people a grand piano is black.
The association is a large instrument with a shiny surface and 88 black and white keys.

It is a pity that so few people know that there are also other valid ways of designing a piano. Bösendorfer manufactures every single instrument by hand, so there is plenty of scope for the consideration of any client’s individual wishes.

"To a certain extent this handbook, which has now reached 100 pages, came about by chance. However, it was always 'in the cards' – although it was not until now that the time was 'right' for getting it all together."
Barry John Hewson, MA

A long line of magnificently designed instruments

Bösendorfer has been working with renowned architects and designers since the 19th century, which has resulted in a long line of magnificently designed instruments. This publication begins with a revue of the historical development of individual Bösendorfer pianos right up to the present day.

"In order to grasp the identity of a designer model, we must bear in mind historically significant phenomena created at the very beginning of the industrial production, when a gradual separation of handwork and design took place."
