Scarlatti piano recital with Carlo Grante
Let us invite you to a very special piano recital on Wednesday, March 10, at Bösendorfer Hall. Italian pianist Carlo Grante will play sonatas of Domenici Scarlatti and will present his new CD recordings of all Scarlatti sonatas.
"Recording all the sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti on the piano is an undertaking of great moment and fascination: a journey through shared cultural experience, as well as one that explores the subtle thought processes of a musical genius..." - Carlo Grante
The Italian Carlo Grante will record all sonatas of his compatriot Domenico Scarlatti.
A musical Odyssey
This is the first complete Scarlatti (1685 – 1757) recording on the piano by a single artist. For this project, the “catalogue” numbering will consist of city or edition, letters and numbers. "Parma has priority, both in order and catalogue arrangement, in the case of those sonatas that appear in other editions or manuscripts as well.) Thus we have the sigla E1-30 for the Essercizi 1 to 30 and P1:1 to P15:42 for all the sonatas in Parma." (Grante)
This enormous body of short keyboard works encompasses many diverse styles, moods, shapes; it is a performer's, as well as listener's, Odyssey through courtly life as well as theatrical commedia dell'arte scenes, one can hear the sounds and songs of common people in the streets of Madrid, the cante jondo from which the so-called flamenco originated, as well as memories of Italian opera and Venetian concerto grosso. The dance-like quality of most sonatas contrasts with a very lyrical, often sad, melancholic character of others. " (Grante)
Bösendorfer - the ideal instrument
The Bösendorfer Imperial piano chosen for these recordings proves to be the ideal instrument for Carlo Grante, who aims at the control of sonic landscapes, textural transparency, songful midrange that his interpretive style, in between a Baroque and pre-Classical approach, require.
Domenico Scarlatti was born in Naples, Kingdom of Naples, in 1685, the same year as Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel.
