Authentic Restoration

Authentic Restoration

Every Bösendorfer piano has its own soul, its own tonal character and is handmade – a breath of fresh air in this age of mass production. Each piano completed at Bösendorfer retains its individual serial number. With this serial number it is entered into our catalog, which we’ve kept since the 19th century. This catalog is the key to our meticulously maintained documentation, which allows us today to restore old Bösendorfer instruments professionally to their original condition.

Restorative measures

The goal of a grand piano restoration is to bring the instrument back to its original condition in terms of sound, appearance and touch.
We restore pianos to their original condition exclusively on the basis of historic records, and it goes without saying that we use original parts. All work is performed in Vienna with Bösendorfer expertise and according to Bösendorfer’s world-famous quality standards. Each Bösendorfer grand piano is manufactured with specific design properties such as screwed-on capo d’astro bars, single-stringing and an open wrest-plank, and constructed according to the resonating box principle. This latter treats the entire instrument as a sounding body and is thus responsible for the unique wealth of tone colors and the Bösendorfer’s typical singing timbre. If possible, the ivory keyboard is retained and protective restorative measures undertaken. Worn-out parts of the action are completely rebuilt and replaced with parts faithful to the originals. The stringing is likewise completely redone according to factory’s proprietary method.
