Born in 2008 in Singapore, Toby Tan Kai Rong is rapidly gaining international recognition as a remarkable, versatile pianist with a unique musical voice,  He has been praised by critics as a phenomenally confident, deeply expressive performer who leaves an unforgettable mark on the classical repertoire.  He has been invited and named an official Bösendorfer Young Artist by L. Bösendorfer Klavierfabrik in Vienna in 2026.

Toby made his breakthrough orchestral debut at just ten years old with South Korea’s Soliall Philharmonic Orchestra, performing W.A. Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major, K. 488. He has since established a prominent presence on the premier stages of his home country, featuring as the 2024 President's Young Performer in a celebrated rendition of S. Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43 with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra at the historic Victoria Concert Hall. In his most recent appearance, he was invited back by the orchestra to perform W.A. Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 14 in E-flat major, K. 449 under the baton of Maestro Hans Graf for the prestigious “Hans Graf Farewell Series: Mozart and Salieri”.

Orchestral Footprint & Global Venues

As a concerto soloist, Toby has collaborated with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra under the batons of Maestros Hans Graf, Rodolfo Barráez, and Joshua Tan. His international orchestral footprint includes a major appearance with the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra led by Maestro Honna Tetsuji, performing S. Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18 at the Vietnam Grand Concert Hall in Hanoi. He has also performed with the Orchestra di Santa Cecilia under Maestro Marius Stravinsky, the Orchestra of the Music Makers under Maestro Chan Tze Law, and the Asia Virtuosi Orchestra conducted by Maestro Fan Ting. Furthermore, he has shared the stage with the Maestoso Chamber Orchestra (Maestro Nguyen Phu Son), the Singapore Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (Maestro Luo Wei), the Kids Philharmonic Orchestra (Maestro Koh Kai Jie), and the Ding Yi Music Company under Maestros Tsung Yeh and Dedric Wong.

His widespread concert invitations have led him to world-renowned international platforms, including the legendary Berliner Philharmoniker, China's Suzhou Bay Grand Theatre, Suzhou Art Culture Centre, and Tianjin Concert Hall, as well as Malaysia's Permaisuri Zarith Sofiah Opera House and Singapore very own Esplanade Concert Hall. Alongside major concertos, Toby is frequently invited to give intimate recitals at historic landmarks worldwide, most notably presenting two full F. Chopin programs at Frédéric Chopin’s birthplace in Żelazowa Wola (Poland), as well as performances at the Yamaha Concert Salon (Singapore), the Megaro Gyzi Cultural Center in Fira (Greece), and both the Prinzenpalais Wolfenbüttel and Martin Luther Kirche Bagband (Germany).

Chamber Music & Elite Collaborations

Equally in intimate, collaborative settings, Toby has built a distinguished chamber profile. He has worked with world-renowned ensembles, including the famous Shanghai Quartet (with whom he performed Mozart's Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, K. 478 at the Tianjin Juilliard Piano Festival, Singapore's premier T’ang Quartet, and the Salzburg Chamber Soloists from Vienna. His diverse artistic partnerships cross genres and instruments, featuring collaborative work with celebrated instrumental soloists such as violinist Chloe Chua, cellists Leslie Tan, alongside pioneering jazz icon Jeremy Monteiro, and stellar vocalists tenor Zhuang Jie and tenor Shuan Lee.

Competition Winnings & International Accolades

Toby’s competitive career is marked by an extraordinary, continuous array of top prizes on the global stage:

·       2026: Awarded the Prize of the Young Musician NLCS (Advanced Category) performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37 with the Asia Virtuosi Orchestra, and captured Second Prize at the prestigious 20th Ettlingen International Piano Competition (Category B) in Germany.  He was nominated for the prestigious Dr. Eva Maria Zbick Künstlerförderpreis (Classical Music) award at the C. Bechstein Centrum in Hamburg, Germany

·       2025: Swept First Prize and the Audience Prize in the Artist Category at the National Piano and Violin Competition in Singapore, and won First Prize and the Best Chopin Prize at the Vietnam International Piano Competition and Festival in Hanoi

·       2024: Awarded First Prize (Artist Category) at the UCSI Piano Competition in Malaysia, Second Prize at the 6th Piano Island International Competition (juries including Dang Thai Son), and Third Prize at the Vigo International Piano Competition in Spain, performing before a star-studded jury that included Martha Argerich.

·       2023: Claimed First Prize and the Carl Nielsen Prize at the Aarhus International Piano Competition in Denmark, Second Prize at the Zhuhai Mozart International Piano Competition in China, and Third Prize at the Singapore International Piano Competition.

Pedagogical Lineage & Education

Toby’s musical development has been deeply enriched through selective global festivals, including the Tianjin Juilliard Piano Festival (where he attained the Jury Discretionary Award in the concerto competition presenting Chopin's Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21), Music Fest Perugia where he was featured as a “Young Star Recitals, and the Resonance Project III International Piano Masterclass in Wolfenbüttel, Germany, where he presented a recital of F. Chopin’s 24 Preludes, Op. 28—all attended on scholarships.

Through these festivals and elite academies, he has studied in masterclasses under an extraordinary roster of legendary artists and pedagogues: Dang Thai Son, Bernd Goetzke, Lilya Zilberstein, Paik Kun Woo, Tamás Ungár, Zhang Haiou, Wang Xiaohan, Yoheved Kaplinsky, Noriko Ogawa, Kate Liu, Eric Lu, Ilana Vered, Markus Groh, Rachel Cheung, Pascal Rogé, Philippe Giusiano, Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń, and Ewa Pobłocka.

Toby is currently pursuing his training at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore under the tutelage of Head of Keyboard Prof. Albert Tiu, while continuing his private studies with Armen Babakhanian.
