Haruna Hirao has studied under Prof. Kazuko Yasukawa since she was seven years old. She graduated from the Music High School attached to the Faculty of Tokyo University of the Arts and entered Tokyo University of the Arts.

She entered the Conservatoire de Paris as a French government-scholarship student in 1961.

In 1964, she graduated from the Conservatoire de Paris with the First Prize.

Since her debut recital in 1966, She has commissioned a large number of works to popularize Japanese piano works.

She was awarded at the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Arts Festival in 1976 as the concert by Japanese works.

In 1986, She was invited to give concerts in France and South Korea.

From 1981 to 1992, She served as a lecturer at the JML Seminar Yoshiro Irino Music Research Institute Contemporary Piano Music Performance Course and trained many contemporary music specialists.

She held a recital in Vienna, Austria in April 2005.

In 2007, she held a concert to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Japanese composer, and her father, Kishio Hirao.

Around this time, she worked on research and dissemination activities for a completely new practice method of piano that incorporated the concept of sports training and became a hot topic in magazines and other media.

In 2009, a book with a DVD was released by Yamaha Music Media that summarizes the contents.

In May 2012, she was invited by a French broadcaster to perform in a chamber music concert.

She held a recital in Vienna, Austria in April 2005.

In 2007, she held a concert to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Japanese composer, and her father, Kishio Hirao.

In October 2016, she held a Bösendorfer concert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of her debut.

In May 2018, she held a recital with an ambitious program incorporating Chopin and Japanese contemporary piano works, which was well received.

In May 2019, she gave a recital with an elaborate program incorporating Poulenc's "The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant" with French language narration, along with Haydn, Beethoven, which was highly acclaimed.

Haruna Hirao presides over the Piano Academy.
