Maximilian Kromer (Österreich)

My first profound musical impressions are closely connected with the Bösendorfer Salon. Even at a young age, I had the opportunity to experience Bösendorfer’s unique sound culture there, which continues to have a lasting influence on me as a pianist to this day.

Maximilian Kromer is among the most versatile pianists of his generation. As a soloist, chamber musician, and song accompanist, he regularly appears at international festivals and in major concert halls, including the Musikverein Vienna and the Konzerthaus Vienna, the Rheingau Music Festival, Tonhalle Maag in Zurich, the Festival de Pâques in Aix-en-Provence, the Enescu Festival in Bucharest, and Mozart Week in Salzburg.

Winning the International Schubert Competition Dortmund in 2025 marked a significant artistic breakthrough for him. The jury, chaired by Ian Fountain, particularly praised his sensitive and nuanced approach to Franz Schubert. This led to the creation of a Schubert–Liszt recital program, with which Kromer is currently touring. His recent projects also include chamber concerts with the cellist Ettore Pagano in Italy, which have taken him to cities such as Florence, L’Aquila, and Verona.

A focus of the coming seasons lies on his solo appearances with orchestra: he will perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, and Dmitri Shostakovich’s First Piano Concerto with the Matrix Orchestra under the direction of Emmanuel Tjeknavorian. In addition, trio concerts with the cellist Jeremias Fliedl and the violinist Fanny Fheodoroff are planned.

Another highlight will be his solo recital at Mozart Week Salzburg in 2027. He will also perform chamber music at the Herbstgold Festival together with members of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

As a song accompanist, Kromer was awarded first prize at the International Helmut Deutsch Lied Competition in Vienna in 2025. Together with the baritone Daniel Gutmann, he released a widely acclaimed CD in 2023 featuring Heine settings by Robert Schumann on the GRAMOLA label. His debut solo album had already been released in 2022 and includes, among other works, the first recording of the Neue Wiener Tänze by Christoph Ehrenfellner.

In addition to his concert activities, Kromer is the founder of the concert series “Zögernights” at the House of Strauss in Vienna, which opens up new perspectives on the chamber music concert format.

His musical education was shaped early on by Susanna Spaemann. He subsequently studied with Noel Flores as well as at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Martin Hughes and Anna Malikova. He also receives important artistic inspiration through his close collaboration with his mentor Alexei Kornienko.

His wide-ranging artistic activity as a soloist, chamber musician, and song accompanist regularly brings him into collaboration with artists such as Rolando Villazón, Daniel Müller-Schott, Timothy Ridout, Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, Julian Rachlin, Julia Hagen, and Michael Schade.
